Journal
The Journal is your garden diary. It lives inside each Workspace and gives you a place to write about what is happening in your garden in your own words — observations, reflections, plans, questions, and lessons learned. While Activities and Observations capture structured data, the Journal is where the story lives.
Writing entries
Open any Workspace and click the Journal tab. The composer sits at the top of the page. Write your entry, add formatting if you like, and post. Each entry is timestamped and attributed to you, so when you look back in December you will know exactly who wrote what and when.
Good journal entries might include:
- A note about the first frost and which plants survived.
- A reflection on why the hot compost in bay 2 never reached temperature.
- A plan for next week's succession sowing schedule.
- A question for your garden group about a pest you spotted.
Visibility settings
Every journal entry has a visibility level that controls who can read it:
- Workspace only — visible to members of this Workspace. Use this for internal notes and working records.
- Community — visible to all logged-in Libre Grow users. Use this to share with the wider growing community.
- Everyone — publicly visible, even to people without an account. Use this for updates you want to share openly.
Linking Activities
You can reference any Activity from a journal entry using a #-mention. Type # followed by the Activity title or ID and select from the dropdown. The entry will show a clickable link to that Activity. This is useful for adding context — for example, writing "Checked the compost today (#Turn compost bay 2) and it has finally hit 65 degrees."
Photos and attachments
Drag and drop photos directly into the composer or use the attachment button. Images display inline in your entry. You can also attach files — PDFs of seed catalogues, spreadsheets of planting plans, or any other document you want to keep with your garden records.
Commenting
Other members of your Hub can comment on journal entries. This makes the Journal a space for conversation, not just record-keeping. Ask a question in your entry and your garden partners can reply directly underneath.
The Journal as a garden diary
Together with Activities and Observations, the Journal completes your garden record. Activities tell you what you did. Observations give you the numbers. The Journal gives you the why and the what-next — the thoughts, context, and plans that make your data meaningful when you revisit it next season.
