Mindful Observation
Sit with one element in your garden or landscape and observe it with full, non-judgmental attention. This is the foundation of permaculture's first principle — Observe and Interact. Regular mindful observation sharpens the pattern recognition and attention to detail that effective design requires.

Procedure Details
Choose a comfortable, safe location. If you feel dizzy or overwhelmed, open your eyes and ground yourself. This is observation, not endurance — work within your comfort zone.
You will need:
- A timer (phone on silent)
- A journal or notebook
- A comfortable seat or standing position
- An element to observe (plant, bed, compost bay, water feature, tree, soil)
Procedure Steps (Version 1.0)
Choose one element in your garden to observe. It can be anything — a single plant, a compost bay, a patch of soil, or a water feature.
Settle into a comfortable position. Sit, stand, or kneel where you can see and sense the element without straining.
Set a timer for 10 minutes (beginners) or 20 minutes (experienced). Put your phone on silent.
Begin observing without trying to name, categorise, or judge what you see. Simply notice shapes, colours, textures, movements, and changes.
When your attention wanders (it will), gently bring it back to the element. Notice what pulled your attention away — this is information too.
Expand your senses: what do you hear around the element? What do you smell? Can you feel temperature, wind, or moisture?
After the timer sounds, take 2-3 minutes to write down what you observed. Include anything surprising or previously unnoticed.
Reflect: how does what you observed inform your understanding of this element's role in your garden system?
