Mindful Communication Log

Track the quality of your communication during a specific interaction — a Hub meeting, design consultation, community event, or garden visit. Mindful communication is the foundation of Principle 8: Integrate Rather Than Segregate. Effective permaculture design requires collaboration, and collaboration requires listening deeply, speaking honestly, and noticing when reactivity takes over.

This is a self-reflection tool, not a way to score or judge others. Focus on your own communication patterns. If you notice distressing patterns, consider seeking support from a counsellor or communication skills course.

Preparation Notes

You will need:

  • An upcoming conversation, meeting, or collaboration
  • A journal or the Libre Grow app to record afterwards
  • A willingness to be honest with yourself
  • 5 minutes before and 10 minutes after the interaction
Procedure Steps (Version 1.0)

Before the conversation, set a clear intention: 'I will listen fully before responding' or 'I will notice when reactivity arises.'

As the conversation begins, notice your breathing. Is it shallow and fast, or slow and deep? Let your breath anchor you.

Practice listening without planning your response. Give the other person your full attention — notice their words, tone, and body language.

When you feel a reactive impulse (defensiveness, urgency to correct, desire to interrupt), notice it without acting on it. Take one breath.

When you do speak, choose your words consciously. Notice the difference between reacting and responding.

Pay attention to your body during the conversation. Tension in the jaw? Crossed arms? Open posture? Your body tells you about your state.

After the conversation, reflect on the quality of listening, your reactivity, and the level of mutual understanding reached.

Record your observations within an hour while the experience is fresh.
