Harvest Quality Assessment

Assess the quality of your harvest at the point of picking. Recording maturity stage, damage levels, and overall quality helps you optimise harvest timing and handling techniques over successive seasons. This is the data that connects Principle 3 — Obtain a Yield — to your actual results.

Procedure Steps (Version 1.0)

Identify the crop and variety you are harvesting. Note the bed or location.

Check maturity indicators for this crop — colour, size, firmness, ease of detachment, seed development, or skin texture.

Assess the level of damage — insect damage, bird damage, sunburn, splitting, bruising, or mechanical injury from tools.

Check for disease signs — spots, mould, soft rot, or unusual discolouration.

Rate the overall quality of this harvest on a 1-5 scale, considering both maturity and condition.

Note the weather conditions at harvest — temperature, recent rain, wind, and time of day.

Weigh the harvest and record the total in kilograms.

Photograph the harvest and note its destination — fresh eating, storage, freezing, canning, drying, or fermenting.
