Energy Audit

Audit your household energy use and identify where you can reduce dependency on grid power and fossil fuels. In a disruption, the households that cope best are those that have already reduced their energy needs and developed alternatives. This audit maps your current energy profile and identifies the highest-impact switches — connecting to Principle 6: Produce No Waste (wasted energy is wasted resilience).

Do not attempt to modify electrical systems, gas lines, or heating systems without qualified assistance. This audit is about awareness and planning, not DIY electrical work.

Preparation Notes

You will need:

  • Your most recent electricity and gas bills
  • A walk-through of your home noting every energy-consuming appliance and activity
  • Knowledge of your climate's heating and cooling demands
  • 30-45 minutes of focused observation
  • Your Libre Grow app or journal
Procedure Steps (Version 1.0)

List all energy-consuming activities in your household grouped by function — cooking (stove, oven, microwave, kettle), heating (central heating, space heaters, hot water), cooling (air conditioning, fans), lighting, transport, communication and devices.

Estimate the current energy source for each activity — mains electricity, natural gas, LPG, wood, solar, or battery.

Identify which activities are essential (cooking, heating in winter, clean water) versus optional or reducible (excessive lighting, entertainment, long hot showers).

Rate your dependency on grid or fossil fuels for each essential activity on a 1-5 scale.

Identify low-energy alternatives already available to you — solar panels, wood stove, thermal mass, haybox cooker, bicycle.

Calculate the potential energy reduction if you switched your top 3 dependencies to alternatives.

Prioritise the top 3 switches by impact and feasibility — what would make the biggest difference and what can you actually do?

Record your complete audit with current state, planned changes, and timeline.
